BUFFALO, N.Y. — Police continue to investigate an incident that left a four-year-old boy and his grandmother dead.
Two officers found the boy, Roderick Geiger III, who was stabbed and bleeding profusely.
When police tried to help him, they say they were attacked by 38-year-old Charlene Fears, who had two large knives.
Police say the two officers involved were 20-year-veteran Robert Yates and a newly graduated officer from the academy.
"They were confronted by a suspect, covered in blood, knife in each hand, who advanced toward them after being repeatedly told to stop and drop their weapons. Our initial investigation, as I said, shows that they were justified in their actions," said Daniel Derenda, Police Commissioner.
Fears died at the scene.
Roderick Geiger was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital, where he later died.
On Monday, friends and family of Roderick, who went by the nickname Manny, gathered to put together a memorial for him.
He's also being remembered with notes and candles at the home where he was found.

“There were a few kids outside and it's sad that those little kids had to see what happened to that baby. Makes me want to keep my kids.. I mean, my kids don't go outside," said Esser Avenue resident, "Mary."
One Esser avenue resident who didn’t want to be identified couldn’t believe the news of a shooting on her block.
Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards says two officers were on patrol around 4:15 Wednesday afternoon.
They were flagged down near 195 Esser Avenue for a commotion on the porch and found the four-year old boy, who had been stabbed and was bleeding profusely. When police tried to assist, they were attacked.
"The officers were charged by a woman running out of the house who was armed with two large knives. And the woman was subsequently shot by one of the officers," said Buffalo Police Department Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards.
Police say Charlene Fears was told repeatedly to drop her weapons before they opened fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy, Roderick Geiger III, was the woman's grandchild. He was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital, where he later died.
A family friend says the woman loved her grandson dearly and couldn't believe what had happened.
However, neighbors say the family did have their run-ins with the law.
"They were always fighting, always, there's always cops at their house, all year long. They are always fighting each other or fighting with the people around the corner or across the street," said "Mary."
Richards says the investigation is ongoing and internal affairs is looking into the matter.
