East Side community is “Taking It To The Streets”

East Side community is “Taking It To The Streets”
BUFFALO, N.Y. - A weekend international crusade rally and festival kicked off Saturday with hundreds of community members shedding light on a park on the East Side of Buffalo.

The citywide event “Taking It To The Streets,” brought people together at Martin Luther King Park to focus on developing change in the community.

Organizers said the area has been widely known for its high crime rate and violence, and Saturday, inspirational songs, on-site counseling, and prayer booths offered an alternative to the negativities.

Anita Williams founded the event nearly 25 years ago to get more people involved in the church and off the streets.

"...And I'm thinking, all the people that are out here, and there's not many people in the church,” said Williams. “Even the church I attended at that time, it was a small church, but it wasn't full, and that grieved my spirit."

Non-perishable food, clothing and school supplies were all given away for free to help those in need.

The 24th annual event continues all day Sunday.
