NATIONWIDE -- Both candidates running for the White House are condemning controversial remarks made by a Missouri Congressman on Sunday. In an interview, Republican Todd Akin was asked if he would support abortions for women who have been raped. Akin said, "If it's legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Akin is challenging Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill. On Monday, GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney and President Obama were asked about the remarks.
"What I do think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn't have a bunch of politicians, a majority of whom are men, making healthcare decisions on behalf of women," said President Obama.
The Romney Campaign said a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape. Akin apologized for the remarks and said he is staying in the race.
