CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. — The recent winter blast helped Peek'n'Peak Ski Resort in Chautauqua County open for business just in time for the busiest week of the year.

Operators say after a slow start to winter, only about half of their slopes are open. But with recent cold spell, they have been making snow around the clock, and they expect to open more slopes each day.

"The ski conditions are really good. The eight inches of new snow last night really made the surface nice and brought the people out," said Brad Gravink, Peek'n'Peak Director of Mountain Operations.

"It's really good compared to the first day. The first day it wasn't really groomed, it was kind of sticky because it was the artificial snow. But it's powder now because of the big snow storm so it's really good," said Chad Bednarski, a snowboarder.

New this year: a giant airbag that daredevils can safely land on when practicing new tricks.
