WESTERN NEW YORK -- Along with a kiss, many ring in the new year with an alcoholic beverage.
"Most people are going out and they're drinking. You need to plan ahead," said Monica Farrar Director of the Resource Training Center in Amherst.
Farrar said plan ahead because the sad reality is after a night of drinking, some will get behind the wheel and drive home.
"If you have to think about if you should be driving, you should not be driving," Farrar said.
AAA says New Year's is the most dangerous time of year to drive and New Year's Day consistently ranks as the year’s deadliest day for alcohol-related fatalities.
Drivers along the NYS Thruway might have noticed electronic billboards that read "Drive Safe and Sober." They're sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
"We hear, on a daily basis, the devastation that families, how it effects them. We just urge everyone to be responsible," said Michele Fonda, MADD NY Program Specialist.
The Resource Training Center suggests after a night of drinking not driving home and finding an alternative like a limo, cab, or public transportation. Or, get a designated driver.
