BUFFALO, N.Y. — More than 700 children and teenagers had their smiles checked out at the 12th annual 'Give Kids a Smile Day.'
The University at Buffalo's Dental School hosts this free dental event to ensure that all children have access to a dentist.
Children are also taught the importance of dental care, and how to prevent cavities.
Many kids cannot get to the dentist, because the parents cannot take a day off of work. Not to mention they don't have dental insurance. Then there's the simple lack of awareness, they may not even know the importance," said Dr. Dian Wells, UB pediatric dentist.
Wells says it is as important to take care of baby teeth as it is adult teeth. Baby teeth can be with a child for up to twelve years, and not taking care of them can lead to significant health problems.
