Monopoly fans held their breath Wednesday as Hasbro Games announced which new token would join the game and which piece would be leaving.
Monopoly lovers like Richard Marinaccio, 2009 United States Monopoly Champion, sprang into action to save their favorite game pieces.
After a month-long Facebook poll with more than 10 million voters, Hasbro announced the iron game token would be retired and be replaced by voter's most popular new token choice, the cat.
"All the classic pieces, I think people have their favorites and people, like I previously said, have memories tied to those tokens. But I guess the iron – I like irons, you still need to iron your shirts and it's still relevant to society – but apparently it was just unpopular," said Marinaccio.
Monopoly board sets with the new token will be on the shelves later this year.
