CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Students from one Cheektowaga school made a generous donation to a local food pantry Friday.

Children from Union East Elementary School collected more than 1,700 canned goods to bring to the food pantry at St. Lawrence church.

The children, from kindergarten to fourth grade, held a five-day contest to collect the most food.

St. Lawrence's pantry serves more than 500 people in the area. Food drive organizers said the students were excited to be able to help those in need in the community.

"They said that they feed over 500 families in the district, in the community, so we thought that would be a nice contribution from Cheektowaga Central," said Jennifer Lewis, Union East Elementary.

The late Father Joe Moreno was an advocate of the pantry at St. Lawrence until his passing.
