A young girl was hit and killed by a car in Jamestown Friday night while sledding near a dangerous intersection. YNN's Katie Cummings reports from Jamestown that police are still looking into what happened, and are reminding parents to keep an eye on their children.

"It appears a five year old girl was sledding down the hill, she entered the roadway and was struck by a vehicle traveling south," said Chief Harry Snellings of the Jamestown Police Department.

We do know there were a number of small children that were sledding. We're talking to all witnesses right now."

Snellings says the conditions near the roadway were hazardous to any child.

"Obviously given the location of the hill, close proximity to Foote Avenue, the high volume of traffic. It's just not a good idea," said Snellings.

You have to provide adequate supervision of your children and make good decisions here."

The girl, whose name is being withheld, was taken to WCA Hospital, where she was prounounced dead.

The driver of the car that hit her will not face charges.

"There was one vehicle. We have spoken with the driver. We're still interviewing him also. Right now, it doesn't appear that he was at fault," Snellings said.

Jamestown Public School officials say the victim was a kindegartner at M.J. Fletcher Elementary School.

The investigation is ongoing.
