Back in February, we ran a segment here on "Your Home" that focused on renovations and remodeling. We introduced you to builder Jim Sasko who reminded us how important it is to keep kitchens and bathrooms up-to-date. His project at the time was a little more involved: A complete home remodel that was only supposed to take eight months.

“It extended itself to ten months, mostly due to the added excitement as you get into the project. Folks start thinking of new, creative ideas and what we call a change order, which isn't necessarily bad. It's a change that typically improves the home in some element or style,” said Sasko.

Remodels and renovations have been popular over the past couple of years as the housing market continues to recover. While most aren't quite as elaborate and extensive as Sasko's project, they give your current home new life.

“One of the changes to this home was an energy retro-fit. That's not something you see from inside the home currently. The home was built originally with 1960's construction, which meant the insulation was very minimal. We didn't have a good sense until we started opening up walls. One of the big improvements is a spray foam insulation,” Sasko said.

Again, this project, while beautiful and amazing, isn't exactly your average remodel. In fact, an addition was built as well. A new master suite. Which, according to Sasko, is one of the most requested renovations today.

Sasko said, “The addition is primarily a luxury master suite. It's an area where folks really spend their money so they're getting some glamour for themselves. It's composed of a large bathroom, walk-in steam shower, very sizable bedroom with coffered ceilings. A lot of customized millwork and cabinetry.”

And remember, any renovation you make for the better, especially kitchens and baths, adds value and translates into more money in your pocket come resale time
