Kauai Katie made it look easy Sunday in a 2 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes.

Under jockey Rosie Napravnik, the Stonestreet Stables filly rolled out of the gate and cruised to an early lead. She completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.81 and paid $2.80. It was her first start since scoring by 12 lengths in a her debut, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race on opening day, July 20.

"She's a a very talented filly," Napravnik said. "From the gate I was riding with a lot of confidence. I knew I had a lot of horse underneath me and were just able to wait."

Kauai Katie set the pace with quick fractions of :21.77, :44.93 and 1:09.72 and never had a serious challenger. Napravnik said she went to the whip once in stretch just to keep the filly's attention.

"The 6 1/2 is a pretty big step from 5 1/2 for these babies," Napravnik said, "but she just powered down the lane and she wasn't at the bottom."

Trainer Todd Pletcher said he didn't have a lot options on how to approach the race.

“Talking about strategy from an inside post with a fast filly and a couple of fast ones outside, we don’t want to take away what’s natural to her," he said. "When you go :22 3/5, :44 and change, you always worry how much they’ll have in the tank coming back on short rest and going from 5 ½ to 6 ½, but I thought she did it well.”

The victory ended Napravnik's 0-for-48 streak.

“It’s always discouraging, especially when people make a comment about it," she said. "Nobody who’s in a slump doesn’t forget how to do their job. We don’t forget how to do our jobs. There’s bad luck involved; there’s good luck involved. We lost a couple of bobs the other day. I had an unlucky trip. It happens. It’s all about keeping a positive attitude. I was really banking on Sunday to come. I wish that Shanghai Bobby (who was scratched) was running again today, too, because obviously he’s a talented colt.”

I did ride her down the lane, but she was obviously the best today.

The six was coming, I could feel him a little bit, but they weren't going to get to us today. She was the best.

I lost a couple of bobs the other day. That stuff happens. It's all about keeping a positive attitude. I was really banking on Sunday to come. I was wishing.
Hopefully, everybody will keep their mouth shut now.
