Gronkowski claims celebrity home run title
It was a Western New York hockey and football theme for the celebrity home run derby.
Fred Jackson, the Bills running back, advanced to the second round with homers over the shorter fence. Jackson, Bills president Russ Brandon and Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta, who just missed getting one over the wall in right, had to watch.
Patriots tight end and Williamsville native Rob Gronkowski ran away with it. Gronkowski did indeed clear the big fence with a shot to left field, edging out Brandon after two rounds.
"It was definitely a little nerve racking going out there," Gronkowski said. "My heart was beating fast, it was kind of like playing a football game with the nerves, and you're not really used to swinging at all. But it was fun, it was a blast, and that's the whole part of it is going out there, having a good time having fun."
Other local celebrities included Lindy Ruff, Joe DeLamielleure, Jim Kelly, Bill Polian, and Nick Bakay.
