Bills lose Jackson

By: Don Heins

It's a sad day for Bills fans. After Sunday's loss we can close the book on the Bills playoff hopes, and Fred Jackson's season is likely over as well.

The veteran running back took a hit to the knee in the fourth quarter and suffered sprain. It's said to be a grade two sprain of the MCL, and will not require surgery. It's normally the type of injury that keeps a player our for a couple weeks. But obviously there's only three games remaining.

"I think it is closer to four to five (weeks) than it is two to three," said Chan Gailey. "I think you would go ahead and make that move (to IR) because to get him 100-percent would be very difficult."

Jackson had a tough year, with three different injuries. His numbers had him rushing for 437 yards and three touchdowns. It's the first time in his career that he's averaged less than four yards per carry, and it's likely ending early for the second straight year.

With Jackson headed to the sideline, the Bills will once again rely more heavily on C.J. Spiller. He had 37 yards on just seven carries, plus a 15 yard reception on Sunday. Many believe he should have gotten the ball a few more times. The Bills were protecting a lead for most of the game. Following the game, Chan Gailey said part of the reason was his "wind."

"He had two good runs in that first drive, he gets winded and he comes out," Gailey said after the game. "We just put Fred in there. It worked out that the next couple of carries."

Spiller was pressed about the comments on Monday, and responded by saying that his conditioning is fine to handle a full load.

"I had two back to back runs (Sunday) of 13 yards," Spiller said. "I'm not going to get in a battle with my head coach (about) if I'm winded. I'm in shape. Let's just put it like that.

"I'm in shape. If wasn't in shape, then I shouldn't be on the field. But I'm in shape. On (Sunday's) opening drive I had two back to back 13 plus yard runs and I stayed in there."
