NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Free vouchers to view Nik Wallenda walk from Goat Island were all claimed within 10 minutes Friday morning.
The vouchers were for spots in the Terrapin Point area of Goat Island for the June 15th walk. Parks leaders say the area can safely hold 4,000 spectators.
By Friday afternoon, the vouchers were already selling on Internet resale sites for between $50 and $100.
Wallenda, meanwhile, is reaching out to those interested in watching his walk... and asking them to make donations. On a new page on indiegogo.com, Wallenda tells supporters he's looking to raise $50,000 to help cover costs associated with the walk.
Senator George Maziarz, who's been a big supporter of Wallenda's walk, says although Wallenda could have handled it in a different way, he understands why the wire-walker is asking for money.
"He's had to hire many engineers, he's had to pay for a lot of different permits to be able to do this walk on both sides of the border and he's trying to cover his costs," said Sen. Maziarz, (R). "Again, his method... it could have been done a little differently.
As of Friday afternoon, Wallenda has raised more than $2,000 through the website.
