JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Students and staff at Rogers Elementary in Jamestown celebrated the "brand new day" Wednesday with a farewell concert from children's entertainer Glenn Colton, as the school is set to close for good next week.
"I have performed shows with this mood in the past, its always very emotional; it's happy, but at the same time it's kinda sad... but to be honest, its the celebration of a great school," said Glenn Colton, motivational entertainer.
That celebration of song and dance was part of the school's final fun fair, that included outdoor games and an indoor art tile project. Each tile has with a group photo of the entire school on it, as a memento for students and parents.
"Well, being the first school my kids went to, its going to be a very fond memory, we drive by here all the time. They'll have good memories, and that's what we want, good memories," said Stacey Micciche, parent.
Even some of the teachers got into the act as they prepare to pack up their classroom for the last time.
"I have just nothing but fond memories, good friends, I raised my family teaching at Rogers so its been a part of my life for years," said Sandra Olson, kindergarten teacher for 34 Years.
Last Spring, the district announced it was closing Rogers Elementary at the end of this school year as a a cost savings measure, reducing the number of Elementary Schools in Jamestown from six to five.
"I'd just like the community to remember that Rogers School was devoted to the students, devoted to their development, the access of their curriculum, and that is was a very caring environment," said David Hickey, Jr., Principal.
A majority of the students will transfer to Fletcher Elementary School, while a handful of others will head out to the remaining four.
