Less than 24 hours after daredevil Nik Wallenda made his trip across the mighty Niagara Falls, he was out in the region cleaning up the aftermath from his historic walk.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Wallenda was joined on Goat Island Saturday afternoon by Niagara Falls City officials and a cleanup crew.

He said he didn't want to leave the region a mess for others to clean up.

City officials said Wallenda and his crew knew there were concerns about the environmental impact of the event and said he and his team made it a priority to clean up the Olmstead Park.

But state parks leaders did allow Wallenda to leave behind something to commemorate the event.

"We've decided that we're going to leave the bolts intact in the ground, bury them, so that we can resurrect them at a later date," Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster said.

"Incredible. I feel great. It feels great that I can look behind me now and all the mess is gone. Everything is cleaned up, there's very few remnants of me being here," Wallenda said.

"I mean that's pretty nice that he's out here cleaning up. I mean how many people do you see that do something AMAZING and comes back to clean up?" Janine Riggi said. "He's a worldwide celebrity," her husband Gary Riggi said.

Dyster said Canadian officials have already decided to erect a monument at the site of the wire bolts on their side of the border.

Saturday, Wallenda was also presented with the key to the City of Niagara Falls which he called an honor.

Wallenda will meet with fans from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Fashion Outlets in Niagara Falls.
