Miss Borinquen Pageant boosts self-esteem
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Young ladies from the Hispanic community had their chance to shine Saturday as they took the stage in the ninth annual Miss Borinquen Leadership Pageant.
The pageant concluded a 12-week development program where Latina teens learn about Hispanic culture and community issues.
Thirteen ladies between the ages of 15 to 19 also learn about self-confidence and how to take on a leadership role for the future.
"One of the things we strive to do through the parade and through our programs, is to raise the self-esteem of the kids, to let them know that there are Hispanics out there that through education and hard work, they too can achieve," said Charles Torres, the president of the Puerto Rican & Hispanic Day Parade.
This year, Sarah Hernandez took home the title of Miss Borinquen Queen.
All contestants will be in the Puerto Rican & Hispanic Day Parade Sept. 8.
