Niagara County Sheriff's deputies honored
NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. — The Governor's Office is honoring two Niagara County Sheriff's deputies who helped save the life of a fellow deputy.
Deputies Jonathan Andres and Shawn Grapes received Certificates of Exceptional Valor Thursday for their actions, which saved the life of Deputy Allen Gerhardt on July 18th, 2011.
Gerhardt lost control of his vehicle, striking a guard rail, which went through the vehicle and amputated both of Gerhardt's legs.
Andres is credited for removing his belt and applying it to Gerhardt's right leg, and Grapes is noted for putting a tourniquet on Gerhardt's left leg.
Officials say without their work, Gerhardt might have never regained consciousness due to the large amounts of blood he was losing.
