BUFFALO -- A program designed to help make Buffalo safer took hundreds of weapons off the street Saturday.

The city's fifth annual gun buyback program brought in a total 746 guns. That's the second highest total since 2007. Of the guns turned in 193 of them were rifles, 254 were handguns, and 5 were assault weapons. Most the guns, a total of 294, were not working. The program allows people to hand in guns they own to one of seven churches citywide, no questions asked.

You'll get a pre-paid credit card for each gun you turn in, ranging in value from $10 to $100, depending on the kind of weapon.

Mayor Byron Brown says some three thousand guns have been taken off the streets since the program started, with every one representing another life possibly saved.

"For anyone that has been shot, or injured or killed with an illegal gun, the damage is something that can't be replaced and can't be calculated," said Mayor Brown.

Ammunition and explosives are also accepted. The program runs through 5 this evening.
