SALAMANCA, N.Y - Seneca Nation President Robert Odawi Porter has reached his term limit. After two years in office, he says he's helped improve the Nation's cultural programs and social services like healthcare and housing.

"These are benefits that I think will talk many years to bare fruit, but I do think the seeds have been planted under my administration and I'm very proud of that," said Robert Odawi Porter, Seneca Nation President.

Porter remains at odds with the state over the Nation's compact, and says it's unfair the Nation takes the blame for withholding casino revenue from local governments.

"We have the upmost sympathy for citizens in Salamanca, Niagara Falls, the city of Buffalo, who have been at the tail end of the state's misconduct, but it is really the state government that has this responsibility that needs to be able to step forward and provide relief for these local governments," said Porter.

"Without the casino revenue, the city is going to have a hard time surviving," said Jeffrey Pond, (D) Salamanca Mayor.

Jeffrey Pond has also reached his term limit, after serving nine years as Mayor of Salamanca.

"We accomplished a lot in fixing a lot of the rundown city infrastructure, with the new two, two million gallon water tanks up on the hill, the upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant so we could handle the casino and any other developments," said Pond.

While voters in the city of Salamanca will choose between Democrat Carmen Vecchiarella and Republican Larry Butler in the race for mayor on Election day, the Seneca Nation has chosen not to publicly endorse either candidate.

"The goal is to have responsible leadership in city hall who can work in partnership with the Seneca nation leadership and my successor," said Porter.

Pond is crossing party lines and says he supports Butler.

Porter's successor, elected Tuesday, is required this time around to come from the Cattaraugus territory.
