Batavia Church Burglar Apologizes at Sentencing

The man who burglarized several Genesee County churches apologized at his sentencing Thursday.
John Cabrera, 22, of Batavia pleaded guilty October 9th to two counts of burglary and one count of escape. A judge sentenced him to six to 18 years in prison.
Cabrera burglarized St. Paul's Lutheran Church in July and made off with a safe containing credit cards, cash and checks. He escaped from the Genesee County jail three days after his arrest and was caught a short time later.
DNA also connected Cabrera to burglaries at the First Baptist Church and St. Mary's Church in Batavia.
"When I look back at it all, it's never worth it to hurt somebody, especially in a community setting like a church. You effect more than one person. You affect a lot of people in the church. I don't know if I'm more disappointed in myself or I'm more mad at myself. Because, it's just wrong either way," Cabrera said.
Cabrera will have to pay restitution to St. Paul Lutheran Church, and First Baptist Church in Batavia.
