LOCKPORT, N.Y. — The Niagara County Sheriff's office began its annual training program Monday evening for teens and young adults who are interested in law enforcement.

More than 15 young men and women from 14 to 20 years old took part in an informational session in Lockport.

During the course of the training, the participants will take part in ride-a-longs, learn about forensics, and tour correctional facilities.

Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour says the program is important for both the young people involved and for the community itself.

"This gives us an opportunity to give something back to the community, and in the same token, it gives us an opportunity to identify potential people to become police officers, to give them initial training, give them some real life experience", said Voutour.

The Niagara County Sheriff's training program is in its 25th year.
