NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Elementary school students honored veterans in a ceremony in Niagara Falls on Wednesday.

Second to sixth grade students recognized and thanked more than 20 veterans.

The ceremony is part of a nationwide initiative to connect students and veterans.

The day is to teach students the importance of recognizing and honoring veterans.

Veterans shared what military life is like and their personal experiences with students.

"It's very important, particularly for these young people, elementary school students, first of all to say thank you to these veterans and to know the importance of serving in the military and knowing the sacrifices it takes," said Sen. George Maziarz, (R), 62nd District.

Take a Veteran to School Day is sponsored by The History Channel and YNN's parent company, Time Warner Cable.

TWC leaders say the day is a great opportunity to support local veterans and troops currently overseas.
