CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. — The Brocton and Westfield school districts continued consolidation discussions Monday evening, offering the public another opportunity to weigh in.
Consultants hired by the districts say both schools are projected to be in financial trouble within five years. They cited rising pension and benefit costs along with declining enrollment as the main factors.
Westfield and Brocton have already merged a number of activities and sports in order to save money.
"You know that our own fiscal cliff is coming for many districts across New York State, and its a matter of being proactive and finding solutions that allow you to maintain the course offerings and everything you have and still being responsible to the taxpayers," said David Davison, Westfield Academy superintendent.
A straw vote on the merger is tentatively scheduled in June.
