BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Charity, giving and thankfulness were on the minds of hundreds of Western New Yorkers as they volunteered to help feed the needy.

The Buffalo City Mission was alive with activity Thursday. Some volunteers prepared meals, others loaded bags of food into vehicles and another group made the deliveries throughout the community.

City Mission representatives say more than 600 volunteers were on hand Thursday to help out.

Some volunteers said it’s important to share the experience of giving with their children.

“There's so much you can do for the community and how to help out. There's some people that need a little extra help around the holidays. We have so much to be thankful for and it’s a perfect time to experience it,” volunteer Bob Neyhart said.

Last year, the City Mission provided 164,000 meals to those in need.
