BUFFALO, N.Y. -- While the shooting in Webster is tragic, local leaders say it isn't uncommon for first responders to get hurt by someone in the line of duty.

“Fire and EMS routinely get assault when they approach a victim. You're going into a victim's home and you really don't know what you're going to be confronted with,” said Dan Neaverth Jr., Erie County Emergency Services Commissioner.

Neavreth hopes this incident helps shine a light on the sacrifices volunteer firefighters make to help protect the community.
