BUFFALO, N.Y. — The children of the Highpointe Pediatric Unit got a few special visitors on Wednesday.

The Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society arranged for several cats and dogs to visit the kids in the long term care unit.

Not only did they pay the children a holiday visit, they brought with them hundreds of gifts collected throughout December by the Veterinary Society.

The visit is an opportunity for the children to see and touch pets that they don't normally get to have contact with.

"These patients are long term patients at this care facility, so for them to get out to the world and see pets in a more natural environment isn't easy for them. They need intensive care, so for us to be able to bring the outside in and let them see some of our pets, who are all gentle and love petting anyway, it's great fun for us and for them," said Dr. Jim Brown, veterinarian.

The Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society is comprised of more than 70 small animal hospitals from around Western New York.
