Sampson's aunt tells YNN that right now, the military is asking the family to not comment as police continue to investigate.
She said that Sampson's parents left for Texas as soon as they were notified of the shooting, and have been there ever since.
The flag in front of their house in the town of Bliss is at half staff.
Sampson has two brothers who are also in the military. All of their pictures are hanging on a poster at the local American Legion.
Sampson served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn, and had been decorated with numerous awards for his service.
