SALAMANCA, N.Y. — Salamanca City Council held its first meeting of 2013 Wednesday evening, welcoming three new council members, as well as a new mayor.

The first order of business was appointing Council member Sandra Magiera as the new council president. The council also approved a number of resolutions that were a matter of formality.

Salamanca's new Mayor Carmen Vecchiarella says he plans to grow the city's economy by establishing good partnerships with the neighbors.

"With the casino and everything, its a large draw. We have Allegany State Park. We have Ellicottville and the skiing. And I believe we've got a lot of strengths here, we just have to get some teamwork and get some ideas and get it going," Vecchiarella said.

Vecchiarella says he has already begun talking with the Seneca Nation about a skating rink and the upcoming sno-cross snowmobile races.
