ASHVILLE, N.Y. — Rescue crews in Chautauqua County were called out to save a horse that had fallen through the ice of a frozen creek Tuesday afternoon.

The horse's name is Shorty. According to his owner, Shorty was tethered to a tree while the men were working on a house along Goose Creek. The horse broke loose and wandered out onto the creek where he fell through the ice.

Rescuers say the owner immediately called for help.

"He was in the creek and probably, almost up to his eyes, to his nose, and we were able to get ropes underneath him, one man in the water with a wetsuit and actually just with manpower, pull him up onto shore," said Chief Kurt Hallberg of the Lakewood Fire Department.

Shorty was in the icy water for about a half hour. He suffered a broken tooth, numerous scratches, and was very cold, but he is expected to be okay.
