Budget Cuts and tax increases were topics of debate at Clarence School Board meeting

Budget Cuts and tax increases were topics of debate at Clarence School Board meeting

CLARENCE, NY--Hundreds of Clarence residents voiced concerns about millions of dollars in school spending cuts during a board meeting Monday.

The superintendent's proposal to the school board included more than 3 million dollars in cuts and a 9.8 percent property tax increase. Included in that spending decrease are proposed layoffs of teachers and other staff.

Many programs could also be cut or reduced. One parent said he would prefer an additional ten to twelve percent tax increase in lieu of the budget cuts, which received loud applause from those in attendance.

"We do not want to see programs and especially teachers cut and class sizes up to twenty or twenty nine at the middle and high school. So you are supported, please think of that", said John Fisgus, parent of two Clarence school district students.

There will be another school board meeting in mid-March. The public will vote on the proposed cuts on May 21st.
